It's never too early to start looking ahead to the 2022 NFL offseason, especially given the recent news of an increased cap number for every team. It should make free agency even more exciting and could allow a team like the Miami Dolphins to take advantage.

The Dolphins are projected to have one of the top-six highest amounts of cap space available following next season and will have multiple holes to address on the roster. With that being said, here are three free agents Miami should sign next offseason.

Miami Dolphins Free Agent Targets

1. Melvin Gordon, RB

The Dolphins have one major area of need on offense and that is at the running back position. Expected starter Myles Gaskin could take a step up this season, but all three of his backups are set to be free agents in 2022. Miami has money to spend and could look towards veteran Melvin Gordon to help fill in the gap. Gordon is a two-time Pro Bowler and has scored 57 total touchdowns across his seven NFL seasons. He would make for a great one-two punch with Gaskin and allows the team to have a great backup option ready to go in case of injury.

2. Zach Ertz, TE

Mike Gesicki has been solid for the Dolphins in his first three NFL seasons, but he is set to hit free agency next offseason. The team could choose to part ways with him and sign a different tight end instead. Zach Ertz seems like a viable option here as he would likely be looking to join a contending team. He could sign a short-term 'prove it' kind of deal and become a reliable red zone option for quarterback Tua Tagovailoa. Ertz averages 10.8 yards per reception in his career and has posted over 800 yards in a season in five of his eight NFL seasons.

3. Chandler Jones, DE

One reason the Dolphins were able to post a winning record in 2020 was due to the strength of their defense. Now imagine that defense with veteran playmaker Chandler Jones on it. Jones was only able to play in five games during the 2020 season, but had racked up at least 11.0 sacks in each of the five seasons prior. He even forced a league-leading 8 fumbles during the 2019 season. Jones is a premiere pass rusher and someone that could take Miami's defense to the next level. This would be an all-in type of move.
