Dalvin Cook has threatened a holdout if the Minnesota Vikings don't sign him to a contract extension ahead of the season, though that threat may not have teeth. Cook won't acquire a year of service (which he needs to be an unrestricted free agent) if he holds out, so he'll likely have to play.

That's not the only issue that stands in the way of a big contract extension, though. He's also becoming an unrestricted free agent at a terrible time, since the running back market is going to be absolutely loaded next offseason.

That incoming rookie class is as loaded as we've seen in a long time. For teams not looking to spend big at the position, taking a gamble on those rookies could be incredibly valuable.

It's not just teams willing to gamble that get plenty of options, either. That upcoming free agent class is ridiculous, and even if a few of the big-name players end up re-signing with their current teams, there should be plenty of strong options on the market.

The running back position is already being devalued by most teams, and now these players aren't going to have much leverage with so many viable alternatives available next offseason.

Ultimately, this is likely good news for the Vikings. They may be able to get Cook back without giving him a massive contract. Even if he refuses a reasonable extension, though, the Vikings will have a ton of options in both free agency and the draft to add a new No. 1 running back.
