It's clear that running back Alvin Kamara is one of the best players at his position to roster in fantasy football. However, another New Orleans Saints' ball-carrier has been turning heads in preseason action. Rookie Tony Jones Jr. is fighting for the backup role and has underrated handcuff value going forward.
Tony Jones Jr. Fantasy Outlook
Jones Jr. was a name almost no one knew heading into training camp, but has has impressed the coaching staff with every opportunity he has been given. The undrafted free agent has led the backfield during the preseason with 12 carries for 106 rushing yards and 1 touchdown.
The former Notre Dame standout put together a reliable college career, racking up 1,754 yards from scrimmage to go along with 14 touchdowns in 37 games. Jones Jr. is now doing whatever he can to lock up the No. 2 RB role against some veteran competition in Latavius Murray.
Murray hasn't done anything especially spectacular in practice so far. He does bring seven years of NFL experience and over 6,200 career yards from scrimmage to the table, though. It'll be interesting to see if head coach Sean Payton takes that into consideration when comparing him to the younger, unproven Jones Jr.
Although Kamara is going to be the workhorse for this Saints' offense once again, he hasn't appeared in all 16 regular season games since his rookie year in 2017. New Orleans loves to lean on the rushing attack and having Jones Jr. stashed on the bench acts as a great insurance policy in case Kamara goes down.
Tony Jones Jr. ADP
FantasyPros' average draft position data shows that Jones Jr. is being drafted No. 295 overall and No. 84 among RBs in PPR leagues.
It's possible the 23-year-old takes on an immediate role within this offense, which makes him a great late-round target for anyone in deep redraft leagues this fall. Jones Jr.'s value obviously skyrockets in dynasty leagues as well.
