It's no secret that Adam Gase has had some struggles since joining the New York Jets in 2019. He may not have inherited an elite roster, but moves like trading Jamal Adams to the Seattle Seahawks have made things even worse in the short term.

In fact, after the Adams trade, Sam Darnold is the longest-tenured first-round pick on the Jets. They don't have a single one of their first-round picks from before the 2018 NFL Draft on the roster anymore.

Adams, one of the Jets' best players at any position, was their 2017 first-round pick. They also traded 2016 first-round pick Darron Lee and 2015 first-round pick Leonard Williams under Gase.

The idea of a franchise tearing things down and rebuilding around a young quarterback makes plenty of sense. But they way you do that is by acquiring draft picks in exchange for older players and adding young talent. Trading away your young talent just continues the cycle of struggling, not allowing players the time to develop into the strong contributors you hope they will be.

Two first-round picks in exchange for Adams was a good haul, for example. But now the Jets will be hoping, especially if these end up being late first-round picks, that they can even get a player who comes close to being as good as Adams.

Rebuilding a struggling team makes sense, but the way Gase is going about it has to have Jets fans scratching their heads.
