The New Orleans Saints' quarterback woes cost the team a playoff spot in 2021 as they finished on the outside looking in with a 9-8 record. Four different signal-callers took snaps for the team, yet Todd McShay projects the Saints to go another way at No. 20 overall in his latest 2022 mock draft.

Saints Mock Draft

McShay has New Orleans slated as the landing spot for Ohio State wide receiver Chris Olave in the first round. Olave possesses elite route running skills and scored in nine of his 11 games played last season. It's a perplexing pick given quarterback Malik Willis is still on the board at that time, though.

Willis is mocked to the Pittsburgh Steelers just two picks after the Saints. McShay does mention his belief that Jameis Winston is going to re-sign with the team this offseason. Even if that happens, it's hard to understand why passing on one of the best QB prospects in the class is a good idea.

Keep in mind this is a notoriously deep receiving class. Grabbing a player like David Bell or Skyy Moore in the second would still solve New Orleans' WR issue. The Saints averaged the fewest passing yards per game of any NFL team last season (187.4) and Winston would be a stopgap option at best.

Meanwhile, Willis has the potential to be a franchise leader given his pinpoint accuracy skills and ability to scramble for first downs. The 22-year-old accounted for 74 total touchdowns over his final two seasons with the Liberty Flames and shined in passing drills at the NFL combine in early March.

The 2022 NFL Draft is set to start on Thursday, April 28.
