Raheem Mostert Makes Prediction About 49ers Starting QB for 2021

One of the most often discussed quarterback controversies of this NFL offseason has been who'll be the starting quarterback for the San Francisco 49ers in 2021. Some observers, and even some Niners players, think it should be Jimmy Garoppolo once again. Others think the 49ers should look elsewhere, especially after trading up to the No. 3 overall pick.

Well, you can add 49ers running back Raheem Mostert to the list of people who still believe that the starting job belongs to Garoppolo.

Mostert appeared on SiriusXM Radio and voiced his approval to move forward with Garoppolo at the helm. "I believe Jimmy Garoppolo will be our starting quarterback going into this season," the running back said in the interview.

Garoppolo appeared in just six games last season, totaling 1,096 yards, 7 touchdowns and 5 interceptions. He was just one of the many 49ers players who dealt with injuries throughout the season following the team's Super Bowl 54 appearance.

When the 49ers made that Super Bowl run, Garoppolo played the best football of his professional career. San Francisco finished the 2019 NFL season with a 13-3-0 record. Meanwhile, Garoppolo had 3,978 yards and 27 touchdowns.

However, it's hard to ignore the role that injuries have played in Garoppolo's career. In his first three full seasons with the 49ers, he's played in only 25 of a possible 48 games. He also has two years left on his contract, with a $26.4 million cap hit in 2021 and $27 million in 2022. It's hard to imagine that the 49ers will want to continue paying him that if he's constantly injured or underperforms.

If Garoppolo does end up being the 49ers starting quarterback in Week 1, his window to impress and keep the job may not be that big depending on who the team selects in the draft this month.
