The Carolina Panthers fired head coach Matt Rhule on Monday after the team posted a dismal 11-27 record under his guidance and got off to a 1-4 start this season. That wasn't the only move Carolina made, either, as they also dismissed defensive coordinator Phil Snow.
Carolina Panthers News
Snow was hired alongside Rhule in 2020 after serving as his defensive coordinator at both Temple and Baylor. At this time, it is not known whether interim head coach Steve Wilks or owner David Tepper made the final decision here. Either way, a clear coaching overhaul is taking place.
Carolina's defense this season has ranked below average during Snow's tenure and currently sits 21st in points allowed (24.4 per game). The Panthers are also allowing an opponent third down conversion percentage of 42.1% (No. 21 in NFL). That is not going to result in many wins.
It didn't take long for Wilks to name Snow's replacement. Al Holcomb has been promoted to DC after serving as Carolina's run game coordinator since the start of the 2020 season. It's a logical decision considering Holcomb was the DC for the Arizona Cardinals in 2018 when Wilks was the head coach there.
The defense is likely the least of Carolina's worries for the immediate future, however. The Panthers have been through a number of starting quarterbacks over the last few seasons, including Teddy Bridgewater, Sam Darnold, PJ Walker and Cam Newton. Baker Mayfield has looked less than impressive in 2022 and is currently hobbled by an ankle injury, potentially opening the door for Darnold to reclaim the job.
Carolina will try to right the ship this weekend against the Los Angeles Rams, who are currently 10.5-point home favorites on FanDuel Sportsbook's NFL odds.
