New Orleans Saints wide receiver Michael Thomas has only managed to play in three games so far this season. He appeared in the Saints' Week 1 win against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, but he dealt with an ankle and hamstring injury that kept him out until Week 9.
While Thomas' production on the field and as a fantasy WR1 have been lacking, he could be line for an uptick with Jameis Winston taking over at quarterback for at least the new few weeks.
Michael Thomas Fantasy Outlook
Starting quarterback Drew Brees is expected to miss a couple of weeks while he deals with broken ribs and a collapsed lung. Brees was forced to miss the second half of Sunday's win against the San Francisco 49ers, and Winston stepped up in his place. Winston's limited reps showcased a connection with Thomas, which bodes well for his fantasy outlook.
Thomas saw 11 combined targets in his two previous games with Brees under center, resulting in just 8 receptions for 68 yards. Against the 49ers, though, Thomas registered a season-high 7 targets, five of which came on Winston's 10 pass attempts.
Thomas has failed so far to work himself back into the Saints' offense as a main option after his absence. Alvin Kamara (80 targets) and Emmanuel Sanders (42 targets) have seen the main share of receiving opportunities with Brees at QB.
Winston's early sample shows an affinity for Thomas, which could be the opportunity that the wideout needs to rework himself into the Saints' offense. If Thomas can see more targets, he should be able to approach the 23.4 fantasy points per game (PPR) he put up last season.
