The Pittsburgh Steelers made a move to improve their defense this past week by trading a 2022 sixth-round pick for Jacksonville Jaguars' linebacker Joe Schobert. Not only will the sixth-year pro start for head coach Mike Tomlin, but Schobert looks poised to take on a surprising role as well.

After going through his first practice sessions with the team, Schobert revealed to reporters that he is being prepared to wear a helmet radio during the season. He will be making the defensive calls on the field and that makes his ability to quickly pick up this Pittsburgh scheme much more important.

"Once the season starts, getting the green dot on the helmet, getting the calls from the coaches. That was the plan.”

The Steelers relied on linebacker Devin Bush to call the plays last season until he tore his ACL. They then turned to his counterpart Robert Spillane for the rest of the year. Bush is expected to be ready to go by Week 1, which would essentially push Spillane back into a reserve role for the 2021 season.

Schobert has become one of the most versatile linebackers in the NFL racking up at least 100 tackles and 2.0 sacks in each of the last four seasons. The 27-year-old is coming off a year in which he posted 141 tackles, 2.5 sacks, 3 interceptions, 4 pass breakups and 2 forced fumbles.

Pittsburgh will look to keep thriving off a defensive unit that allowed just 21.2 points per game last season (No. 5 in NFL). For now, the Steelers have odds set at +440 to win the AFC North division and odds set at +4400 to win the Super Bowl, according to FanDuel Sportsbook.
