Jadeveon Clowney is one of the biggest enigmas in the NFL right now. On one hand, he's clearly one of the most talented defenders in the league when he's right. On the other, he's almost never "right," having failed to play a 16-game season since 2017. He's also never recorded a double-digit sack campaign, which seems almost impossible for someone who impacts the game so frequently.

And yet, fair or not, Clowney still seems to view himself as one of the best defenders in the league. The league doesn't seem to agree, as the 28-year-old hasn't gotten the lucrative multi-year deal he's been searching for since leaving the Houston Texans.

All of that makes Clowney's NFL future incredibly difficult to predict. Likely forced to settle for another one-year, "prove-it" deal, here are the three best remaining free-agent destinations for the former No. 1 overall pick.

Jadeveon Clowney Rumors

3. Jacksonville Jaguars

If the Jacksonville Jaguars really want Clowney, they should be able to get him. No one has more money to spend than Jacksonville, per Spotrac. Urban Meyer has also been pretty vocal about his desire to build a dominant D-Line. Adding Clowney would help him do just that. With the former No. 1 overall pick wreaking havoc, Josh Allen could take the next step and become a truly dangerous edge rusher.

2. Carolina Panthers

Clowney is from South Carolina, and heading to his hometown team would make a ton of sense. Carolina's defense surprised some people last year after a disastrous 2020 campaign. Signing Clowney could help this unit evolve into a truly dangerous group. With rising stars in Brian Burns on the edge and Derrick Brown on the interior, Clowney's ability to line up all over the defensive line could give the Panthers one of the most athletic pass-rushing units in the league.

1. Indianapolis Colts

The Indianapolis Colts already have one of the best defenses in the NFL, checking in as a top-10 scoring defense in 2020. But Clowney could transform this group into a true top-five defense. With Darius Leonard, DeForest Buckner and Clowney in the front seven, Indianapolis would be a terror to any opposing QB. GM Chris Ballard has been hesitant to shell out big money in free agency as he knows he'll have to extend some of the Colts' young stars down the road. But with $38 million in available cap space, Ballard can sign Clowney to a big one-year deal without sacrificing his ability to retain those names down the road. If Wentz returns to form and Clowney joins the fray, Indianapolis could be a real contender in 2021.
