The St. Louis Cardinals have fallen behind in the NL Central race. At 47-47, they're 8.5 games back of the first-place Milwaukee Brewers, and they could use a boost if they're to challenge for a playoff spot in the second half of the season.

That's why it's great to hear that starter Jack Flaherty is making progress in his injury recovery.

Jack Flaherty Injury Update

The 25-year-old ace made his last start for the Cardinals on May 31, hitting the injured list soon after with an oblique injury. However, he's scheduled to face live batters this week, which is an important step towards his return.

Flaherty was exceptional to start the 2021 campaign, going 8-1 across 11 starts with a 2.90 ERA and 67 strikeouts. His performance easily would've earned him his first-ever All-Star Game nod if he wasn't forced to hit the IL.

Getting Flaherty back at his pre-injury form would be massive for a postseason push. The Cardinals are currently +2100 longshots to win the NL Central, according to FanDuel Sportsbook.
