The Houston Astros are rolling as July approaches. They own the best record in the AL at 48-30 and are poised to make another World Series run. They also have a key reinforcement on the way in reliever Joe Smith.

Joe Smith Injury Update

Smith threw 34 pitches in a bullpen session in Monday and is optimistic about a return in the coming days. He said his throwing session was a "big step in the right direction" that allowed him to "clean some stuff up." Smith also added that if everything with his rehab goes well on Tuesday, he could be activated off of the injured list following his bout with elbow soreness.

This is great news for Astros fans on multiple levels. Getting the reliever back will immediately boost their bullpen. But going beyond that, Smith clearly knows he's had some struggles this season given his 6.23 ERA, and he used this time off to hopefully work his issues out.

Now Smith can return with a clear head and fresh arm as the Astros hope to pull away from the second-place Oakland Athletics in the AL West. Houston is currently the -300 favorite to take home the division in 2021, according to FanDuel Sportsbook.
