The Minnesota Vikings made it clear that their offseason program would include a kicker competition. The team wanted to push starter Greg Joseph to his limit, which involved bringing in undrafted rookie Gabe Brkic on a three-year deal last month.

For fans hoping for a lengthy competition, that won't be the case. The Vikings have already ruled that Joseph won the contest when they announced Friday morning that Brkic has officially been waived.

Vikings Roster News

It's usually a long shot for an undrafted rookie to make a 53-man roster anyway, but it's clear that Brkic did the opposite of impressing his coaches if the competition ended this soon.

The former Sooner was as solid as they come during his collegiate career, missing just one of his 160 extra-point attempts over four seasons at Oklahoma. His field-goal percentage (82.6%) left a bit to be desired, but the hope was that friendly competition with Joseph could've brought out the best in him.

Instead, the Vikings will run it back with Joseph for the second straight year. He made 86.8% of his extra-point attempts and connected on 80.9% of field-goal tries while averaging 63.9 yards with 76 touchbacks on 94 kickoffs.

Minnesota inked Joseph's restricted agent tender in early May, making it clear that they believe in what the 27-year-old brings to the table. Whether or not that's good enough to help his team return to the playoffs remains to be seen.

Vikings Playoff Odds

The Vikings will need Joseph and the rest of the team to be at the top of their if making the playoffs is the ultimate goal. FanDuel Sportsbook is slightly favoring Minnesota to miss the 2022-23 NFL postseason at -126 odds.
