The first half 2019 Atlanta Falcons season was a massive disappointment, and no play summed it up better than Matt Ryan getting taken down by a crushing stiff arm against the New Orleans Saints.
The Saints-Falcons rivalry is one of the fiercest in American pro sports. With the Falcons 3-8 and the Saints 9-2 heading into a primetime Thanksgiving matchup, Atlanta fans were already preparing for the worst.
During the last stages of the third quarter, the Falcons found themselves down 20-9. Matt Ryan dropped back on first down and tried to throw a checkdown pass. Unfortunately for Ryan, it fell into the arms of Shy Tuttle, who made the interception and rumbled back down the opposite direction. Ryan tried to make a tackle, but he was destroyed when Tuttle stiff-armed him to the ground.
Ryan's attempt at a tackle was brave, but it led to a hilarious outcome. Tuttle's interception set up a Saints field goal and ultimately a 26-20 victory. The Falcons actually won every game they played after this, but this stiff arm would be the low point of Ryan's season, figuratively and literally.
