The 2021 MLB campaign is one that Minnesota Twins fans will want to forget sooner rather than later. Aside from their last-place spot in the AL Central standings (43-59), Minnesota's dealt with a number of injury issues throughout the campaign.
Catcher Mitch Garver has been hit particularly hard by the injury bug. He missed nearly the entire month of June with a groin issue and was recently activated in the middle of July. Then, on Tuesday night, Garver was the victim of one of those scary and freaky baseball injuries.
The 30-year-old backstop got hit squarely by a pitch on his throwing hand while up to bat in the 10th inning of Tuesday's contest. Luckily for Minnesota, it appears Garver avoided a major injury scare.
Mitch Garver Injury Update
According to manager Rocco Baldelli, Garver underwent x-rays following the game. The x-rays came back clean and the Twins have now listed their backstop as just day-to-day.
Based on the initial reaction to this HBP, Garver and the Twins avoided a potentially bad outcome. When healthy, Garver is an important piece to Minnesota's lineup and defense. He's slashing .238/.357/.569 on the year with 11 home runs and 24 RBIs in just 46 games played. He also plays .997 defense behind the plate while his veteran leadership is important to the Twins pitching staff.
Garver will likely need a day or two off, but the Twins are just happy he won't be headed right back to the injured list. Currently, Minnesota owns longshot +21000 odds to win the division on FanDuel Sportsbook.
