San Francisco 49ers quarterback Trey Lance looked decent in his team's 28-21 win over the Green Bay Packers last week. Unfortunately, the polarizing signal-caller's first practice since the preseason victory has fans worried about his ability to be the 49ers' No. 1 QB once again.

Lance had a disastrous practice on Sunday, going 4-of-15 (26.7%), leaving much to be desired. While he did make a pair of touchdown passes to Brandon Aiyuk and George Kittle, The Athletic's David Lombardi points out that those brief instances of success "were surrounded by several misfires."

49ers Training Camp

Even though it was only practice, Lombardi makes a good point when he says that Lance's latest performance shows a "mercurial pattern of this camp." There have been times where he's looked solid, only to be followed by an abysmal performance, making fans wonder if it's a good decision to move on from Jimmy Garoppolo.

After the 49ers moved several picks to draft Lance third overall in 2021, so it's too late the back out now. Garoppolo is essentially out the door, meaning any shot at success this season hinges on Lance's ability to excel in his first full-length football season since he was a sophomore in 2019.

While Lance appeared in six 49ers games last season, he only started in two. He completed 31-of-52 passes over that stretch, recording 441 passing yards and two touchdowns to a pair of interceptions. In signature fashion, he also rushed the ball 24 times for 120 yards on the ground.

Lance has been inconsistent at training camp, but he's fortunate to have four weeks until the NFL regular season begins. Hopefully, he can use the remaining practices and preseason games to work things out if the 49ers hope to win their first Super Bowl in nearly 30 years.

49ers Super Bowl Odds

Even with Lance's training camp woes, FanDuel Sportsbook still views the 49ers as a Super Bowl LVII threat. San Francisco's +1600 odds to win the championship next February rank seventh-best across the NFL.
