This Chiefs-49ers Trade for Matt Breida Could Work

While the San Francisco 49ers might not be excited to work with the Kansas City Chiefs after suffering a Super Bowl defeat at their hands, the two could find some common ground in trade talks this offseason.
Reports surfaced on Monday that the 49ers may be looking to move Matt Breida since they have so much depth at running back, and the Chiefs could put together some interesting offers for him.
Matt Breida the odd man out among #49ers running backs, says @MaioccoNBCS https://t.co/p1iIrbQxeq

Breida has never been given a workhorse role in San Francisco, but he's quietly put together a terrific first three seasons in the NFL. Looking at running backs with at least 300 carries since Breida came into the league in 2017, he ranks third with an average of 4.99 yards per carry. He's not just a dangerous rusher either, adding 561 yards on 67 receptions over his career.
When Damien Williams got hurt last season, we saw that the Chiefs are hurting for depth in the backfield, and Williams only has one year left on his contract. KC could really use another playmaker at running back.
While the David Johnson trade may have it looking like acquiring a veteran back is an expensive endeavor, that one was an outlier. Kenyan Drake, for example, was moved for a conditional fifth- or sixth-round pick during the 2019 season. He had an expiring contract, which is the same situation Breida is in now.
With a full season to play Breida will likely command a more sizable return, but it shouldn't be crazy. After winning the Super Bowl, the Chiefs are picking toward the end of most rounds, and something like their third-round pick (No. 96) or even their fourth-rounder (No. 138) may get the job done.
Matt Breida has been an excellent story for the #49ers since coming to the team as an undrafted FA.

Now a restricted FA, will he return this offseason to the red and gold? pic.twitter.com/h54q1Dw23y
This is a deep draft class for running backs, so the trade market for Breida isn't likely to be too competitive. As a championship contender, though, it makes more sense for the Chiefs to swap a pick for a player who has already proven themselves at the NFL level than to roll the dice on a rookie.
If he's available at the right price, trading for Breida would be a great move for Kansas City.
