The Bills Must Sign Melvin Gordon Immediately

There have been rumors swirling about where Melvin Gordon is going to end up long-term since he began his contract holdout prior to the start of the 2019 season. He eventually decided to end his holdout and played out his contract with the Chargers.

Fast forward to the offseason, and Gordon is officially an unrestricted free agent free agent. One team that could use his services, and has the cap space to sign him, is the Buffalo Bills.

After cutting LeSean McCoy last season, the Bills used a running back-by-committee approach, which included rookie Devin Singletary, veteran Frank Gore and T.J. Yeldon. Both Singletary and Yeldon remain on the team this year, while Gore's status is up in the air.

While Yeldon is much more of a passing-down back at this point, especially in the Bills current set up, Singletary did show some flashes when he wasn't hampered by injures.

With over $40 million in cap space remaining, bringing in a guy like Gordon would be a major upgrade over the aging Gore. Gordon has the ability to lead the committee and even handle almost the entire load if injuries to Yeldon or Singletary pop up again in 2020.

Gordon has been a production machine for the majority of his career, scoring double-digit touchdowns in three of the last four seasons, and the only time he didn't was last season, when he only played in 12 games and still finished with 9 total TDs. He's also gained over 1,000 yards from scrimmage in three out of the last four seasons.

From a contractual standpoint, Gordon may not be viewed as a top tier back after a disappointing 2019 campaign. That could keep him out of the top pricing tier at running back, meaning somewhere in the low-$10 million range, or even lower. That's a number the Bills can certainly handle.

With Singletary's injury concerns, adding Gordon is a move the Bills need to strongly consider. He is an upgrade any way you slice it, and pairing the two would provide them with a dynamic and exciting backfield for years to come. Not to mention, they would give Josh Allen a super-talented backfield to go along with the super-talented wide receiver they just acquired in Stefon Diggs.
