As the San Diego Padres continue to struggle down the stretch, a real opportunity has emerged for the Cincinnati Reds. The Reds, with their 69-59 overall record, hold the National League's second Wild Card spot with less than a month to go.

There's plenty of baseball left for the Reds to secure a postseason bid, but the team received some devastating injury news with one of their top relievers, Tejay Antone. Antone took to Twitter on Thursday morning to announce he'll undergo Tommy John surgery this week, ending his 2021 campaign.

Remarkably, this will be the second Tommy John surgery Antone has gone through in his baseball career. Worse for the Reds, this is a major blow to one of the worst bullpens in the league.

Tejay Antone Injury Update

Antone pitched consistently throughout the first two months of the 2021 MLB season, but has been notably absent since late June with a forearm strain. The 27-year-old righty did come back for one appearance on Aug. 24, but was immediately placed back on the 10-day injured list with that same injury before this news.

Through the first two months, Antone was close to untouchable on the mound. In 23 appearances, the second-year righty pitched to a 2.14 ERA, stifling 0.891 WHIP while striking out 11.2 batters per nine innings.

Cincinnati ranks 28th in the league with a 5.27 bullpen ERA. By contrast, their starting pitching staff ranks 11th with a 3.88 mark. And, Cincinnati's offense scores 5.02 runs per game on offense, the sixth-best offense in the league. The Reds need all of the bullpen help they can get, and this latest news is a major blow to their postseason chances.

Currently, Cincinnati holds -210 odds to make the playoffs on FanDuel Sportsbook, and +164 odds to miss out on postseason baseball.
