When the Miami Dolphins drafted Tua Tagovailoa with the fifth overall pick in the draft, there was never any question that he was the future of the franchise. The only question was, when will he become the starting quarterback?
Ryan Fitzpatrick is the current Dolphins signal-caller, and the veteran had a solid season in 2019, outperforming Josh Rosen and leading Miami to five unexpected wins. At the end of the day, though, even Fitzpatrick knows his time as the starter is limited.
This is a classy move by Fitzpatrick, who has been around the block a few times, but the truth is he may be called upon more than expected in 2020. Tagovailoa has had injury concerns in college, and during a season impacted by Covid-19, the smart move may be to red-shirt the rookie.
Even if that's the case, this has to get Dolphins fans excited about the future. Brian Flores has totally rebuilt this defense, and he didn't coach like a rookie in his first season. The days of the Dolphins being irrelevant are over. This team could be pretty competitive in 2020. And with Tua at the helm, the sky's the limit.
