Kansas City Royals catcher Salvador Perez has been a bright spot for his team in a otherwise disappointing season. Perez's early-season efforts earned him an AL All-Star nod and spot in the upcoming Home Run Derby as teams head into a much-needed break.

However, Perez was scratched from the lineup on Sunday with a surprise back injury.

Perez reportedly dealt with back tightness during Saturday's game and he was given Sunday off as a result. A day off for a catcher, especially right before the All-Star break, usually isn't much cause for concern, but Perez has appeared in all 89 games for Kansas City so far. It's clear whatever he's dealing with was worth giving an off day to recover.

The 31-year-old catcher has been the soul of the Royals' offense this season. Perez leads the team in both home runs (21) and RBI (53) while slashing .275/.300/.501.

Perez's actual injury and its severity are unknown yet, though it could put his appearances in the All-Star Game and Home Run Derby in jeopardy. Hopefully his absence on Sunday is just precautionary ahead of what will be a busy weekend for the 10-year pro.
