Throughout the 2021 MLB season, the Boston Red Sox continue to battle the Tampa Bay Rays for the top spot in the AL East. With a 32-20 record, the Red Sox trail the Rays by a single game for the division lead. In other words, they'd appreciate any help that they could get to shift the balance in their favor.

Fortunately, some help may be on the horizon in the form of Chris Sale. The Red Sox's left-handed starter has been out of the lineup since undergoing Tommy John surgery in March 2020. However, Boston's chief baseball officer Chaim Bloom had some promising news regarding when Sale could be back in the lineup.

Chris Sale Injury Update

Sale has been rehabbing in Fort Myers, FL over the last little while, testing out his arm on the mound. As the Red Sox continue to ramp up his training, the hope is that the left will be back with the team sometime in the summer.

The fact of the matter is that Sale has been one of the best pitchers in baseball over the last decade or so. He has a career record of 109-73 through 232 starts. A former World Series champion, Sale's been the American League strikeout leader twice in his career, including in 2017 when he recorded 308 of them — the 6th-highest total since 2000. If he can get back to form once he returns, Boston would love if he could produce those type of numbers on the mound again.

The Red Sox currently have a team ERA of 3.85, which ranks 11th across the MLB. They're also averaging 8.75 strikeouts (14th) and 0.75 home runs per game (3rd). While these numbers are quite respectable, no doubt adding a seven-time All-Star to the rotation could boost those statistics higher up the rankings.

FanDuel Sportsbook has given the Red Sox +2200 odds (T-10th) to win the World Series. With Sale expected to be back on the mound sometime in the summer, there's a good chance that Boston could see its championship odds increase.
