The Jacksonville Jaguars are in the middle of yet another team rebuild, but they appear to have a quarterback they believe in. They made the bold statement of committing to last season's sixth-round draft pick, Gardner Minshew, to be the team's starting quarterback. Now, they just need to surround him with playmakers.
While the Jaguars have talent at wide receiver and they have a stud running back in Leonard Fournette, they do not have a receiving weapon out of the backfield. These are three receiving backs the Jaguars should target to pair with Minshew.
1. Devonta Freeman
Devonta Freeman is now a free agent, after spending his first six NFL seasons with the Falcons. During that time, he racked up 2,015 receiving yards, averaging 7.8 yards per reception and 26.2 receiving yards per game. Unlike the other two mentioned below, Freeman also has success running the ball, totaling 3,972 rushing yards, averaging over 50 per game. Should the Jaguars want to create a balanced backfield to assist Minshew and extend the life of Fournette, bringing Freeman in makes the most sense.
2. Chris Thompson
While he has proven to be injury prone, Chris Thompson has also proven to be an elite receiving weapon out of the backfield. He has seen at least 50 targets and 39 receptions in each of the past four seasons, despite missing 17 games over that stretch. Still, with 8.4 yards per reception and 4.8 yards per carry for his career, Thompson looks to be a perfect complement to a bruiser like Fournette.
3. Theo Riddick
Theo Riddick actually converted to running back in the NFL, after playing slot receiving in college. His experience at receiver has certainly showed in the NFL, racking up 2,238 receiving yards during his six seasons with the Detroit Lions. Coming off a fractured shoulder that caused him to miss the 2019 season, he should be able to pick up where he left off.
