Philadelphia Phillies catcher J.T. Realmuto has been in and out of the lineup more times than fans can count this season. After missing some games due to a non-COVID-19-related illness and bruising on his knee, the Phillies catcher is expected to miss even more time now.
Realmuto has sat out of the Phillies last four games because of a bruised bone in his left hand. While the injury was expected to be minor at first, the team wound up placing him on the 10-day Injured List on Friday. It's safe to say that this isn't the news the Phillies and their fans were hoping for.
J.T. Realmuto Injury Update
The team placed him on the IL retroactive to May 18, but hopefully he can get back on the diamond soon.
Realmuto had been off to one of his best seasons in a long time. Through 109 at-bats, he's managed to tally 7 doubles, a triple and 4 home runs on 32 hits for 17 RBI. He's also slashing at .294/.400/.486, which would give him one of his most promising campaigns at the plate if he can remain healthy once he returns to the lineup.
With a 22-22 record, Philadelphia trails the New York Mets by 1.5 games for first place in the NL East. Considering how they have +340 odds to win the division, according to FanDuel Sportsbook, it's definitely possible for the Phillies to catch their rivals.
However, the first step to getting there is by getting Realmuto back to full health.
