The race for the National League's second Wild Card spot is tight and the San Diego Padres find themselves right in the middle of it. San Diego sits 0.5 games back in the race and part of a trio of teams within 2.5 games of that coveted postseason spot.

Fortunately for San Diego, the team got some great news on Thursday night regarding All-Star second baseman Jake Cronenworth's latest injury update.

Cronenworth has been sidelined since Friday with a small fracture on his finger. However, the slugging infielder is expected to return this weekend after successfully taking ground balls.

Manager Jayce Tingler's latest update on his All-Star infielder is telling of the situation San Diego finds themselves in the standings. He was asked if Cronenworth will be ready to play in the Padres three-game set with the St. Louis Cardinals.

"I don't know yet... he's probably gonna play all three," said Tingler.

Simply put, Tingler and the Padres understand the urgency of their postseason hopes. There's just 15 games left for San Diego to secure a postseason berth and this team will need all the help they can get, especially in the form of an All-Star infielder.

Cronenworth is slashing .270./.348/.466 in his first-ever All-Star campaign with 20 home runs and 63 RBIs. The Padres own +5500 odds to win the World Series on FanDuel Sportsbook.
