After leaving Thursday's start with lower back tightness, Yu Darvish is expected to land on the injured list. That leaves a gap in the San Diego Padres' rotation, and the team's answer to that problem is incredibly concerning.
Jake Arrieta Padres
In 2015, talking to Jake Arrieta would have been exciting. In 2021 it's desperate.
The Chicago Cubs just waived Arrieta after he collapsed by giving up 8 earned runs in 4 innings in his last start. That wasn't just a simple hiccup, either, as he's sporting an egregious 6.88 ERA across 20 starts this season. That's a step back from the already bad 5.08 ERA he managed in 2020.
This is brutal timing as well. Sitting 10.0 games back of first in the NL West, the Padres are likely competing for a Wild Card spot as the postseason approaches. They're currently in line to earn one, but a couple of Jake Arrieta starts could change that in a hurry.
As things stand currently, FanDuel Sportsbook's MLB odds have the Padres tied for eighth in the majors with +2100 odds to win the World Series.
