New Bucs Coach Has Unflattering Kyle Trask Take

As of now, Kyle Trask is in line to be QB1 for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers next season. While no one really believes that's the guy they will be going into Week 1 with under center, it's surely what Tampa Bay is saying publicly.

New Buccaneers offensive coordinator Dave Canales gave a press conference on Wednesday and was asked about Trask. He provided an odd and frankly unflattering analogy regarding the young QB, who has only played briefly in one game as he prepares for his third season.

Comparing Trask to a completely different position is a weird choice. However, he most likely is saying they will aim to make Trask an efficient game manager.

There's nothing wrong with being that type of signal-caller, as most rookies or young QBs go through that period. The ceiling is much lower, though, than having a transformative talent under center. These comments, combined with Trask's reported struggles, don't paint the best picture regarding his long-term potential.

With a QB like Trask, it will be about limiting mistakes and turnovers while putting together the right offense around him. If you want to call that a point guard, sure, but unless Trask takes major strides forward this offseason, I doubt Canales would be comfortable with him as the starting QB next season.
