The San Diego Padres have stayed in playoff contention despite not having star shortstop Fernando Tatis Jr. healthy. They currently own the NL's second Wild Card spot with a 47-36 record, but still need a few roster upgrades. That paints them as a big-time buyer at the upcoming MLB trade deadline.

San Diego Padres Trade Rumors

Despite an obvious need for a center fielder, the Padres' biggest issue may be at the first base position. Starter Eric Hosmer has fallen apart, posting a dismal .567 OPS in the month of June. ESPN's David Schoenfield sees San Diego as the perfect landing spot for Josh Bell as a result.

The Nationals slugger has been on fire this season, slashing an impressive .311/.393/.502 across 83 games. He has also tallied 44 runs scored, 17 doubles, 12 home runs and 47 RBI. The fact that he is on the final year of his current contract means Washington should be looking to trade him right now.

This one may simply come down to where the front office wants to invest at most. Tatis hinted that he is open to playing in the outfield when he returns, which would allow Ha-Seong Kim to remain the starting shortstop. Moving Hosmer to a bench role is a move that has been on the horizon for a while.

The Padres made a handful of moves at the trade deadline over the past two years, so expect a lot of names to be linked to them in July. After all, keeping up with the Los Angeles Dodgers is no easy task. San Diego has odds set at +1400 to win the World Series, according to FanDuel Sportsbook.
