Even after a solid 35-26 start to the season, the San Francisco Giants still find themselves trailing two teams in the NL West division standings. Their slim 2.0-game lead in the Wild Card standings positions the franchise as obvious buyers at the upcoming August 2nd Trade Deadline.

ESPN insider Bradford Doolittle recently reported on the current state of all 30 teams heading into trade season, and named one All-Star catcher as a top Giants target before the first week of August.

Giants Trade Rumors

When discussing high-profile catchers on the trade block, there's one name that fits the bill and thats Willson Contreras of the Chicago Cubs.

Giants News

The Cubs are facing the possibility of Contreras walking in unrestricted free agency at the end of the year, and must capitalize on his value in a now-or-never situation.

On the other hand is a Giants roster that isn't drastically different from the team that won 107 games a year ago, save for the retirement of fan-favorite Buster Posey. The seven-time All-Star and former MVP's departure left San Francisco with a massive hole in production behind the plate.

Posey slashed .304/.390/.499 in his final year, a far cry from the production of Joey Bart (.156/.296/.300) and Curt Casali (227/.296/.398). The lack of hitting production may not be felt in full force yet consider San Francisco still ranks fourth in the MLB with 4.95 runs scored per game, but that issue will rear its ugly head if the Giants don't address it.

The addition of Contreras figures to put the Giants back in serious World Series contention. After all, he's a two-time All-Star, former World Series champion, and slashing .279/.403/.546 with 12 home runs. San Francisco is listed with just +4000 odds to win the 2022 World Series on FanDuel Sportsbook.
