The St. Louis Cardinals will explore every option this offseason to improve their roster for the 2023 campaign. Free agency presents an opportunity for this club to fill several holes, like the one left by the departure of Albert Pujols.

One MLB insider has recently floated a former Cardinal as a potential target this winter.

Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic openly speculated about St. Louis reuniting with longtime veteran Matt Carpenter in free agency. Rosenthal noted he has no inside info about this possibility, but made the case for why it could happen.

"Carpenter was a roommate in rookie ball with Cardinals manager Oli Marmol. His transformation last offseason included a visit to the Marucci’s baseball performance lab in Baton Rouge, La., with Cardinals stars Paul Goldschmidt and Nolan Arenado, as well as hitting sessions with former teammate and new Cardinals bench coach Matt Holliday."

Carpenter's connections to the organization are obvious. He was originally a 13th-round selection by the team in the 2009 draft, and made his MLB debut in 2011. The infielder then went on to enjoy 10 successful seasons in St. Louis, earning three All-Star nods and winning the Sliver Slugger award in 2013.

These sides ultimately split after the 2021 campaign before Carpenter landed with the Texas Rangers. He didn't play a game with Texas this season, though, and signed with the New York Yankees following his release. The veteran showed he still has plenty pop in his bat left after racking up 15 home runs and 37 RBIs in just 47 games.

The almost 37-year-old would be a great choice to take over Pujols' spot at DH, and he's still capable of playing several positions as well if called upon. It'd be great to see both sides join forces again for the 2023 season.
