Mike McCarthy Weighs In on Cowboys Signing Cam Newton

Former NFL MVP Cam Newton is officially on the market again, and there are a few teams that could use his services. One destination that's been talked about for Newton is the Dallas Cowboys, who don't have a ton of talent behind Dak Prescott.
Cowboys head coach Mike McCarthy has weighed in on the potential of signing the 32-year-old.

“I think he has a ton of football left. But we’re very excited about the group that we have."

McCarthy was nothing but complimentary towards Newton, praising the 2015 MVP. However, Dallas' head coach seems more than content with his team's current options behind Prescott.
It's certainly an interesting choice for McCarthy to make. Cooper Rush and Will Grier are unknowns, and the Cowboys could be in trouble if one of them needs to step up. Hopefully neither does, but Prescott is coming off of an injury, so having steady depth is important.
It remains to be seen what Newton decides to do next. He could take a backup role somwhere else, though it's clear he wants to contend for a starting job. Waiting until the regular season begins and seeing what injuries pop up may be his best path to earning a QB1 job at the moment.
Meanwhile, the Cowboys are one week away from their season-opener against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Dallas is a 7.5-point underdog in that matchup, according to FanDuel Sportsbook.
