With a 44-37 record, the New York Mets currently sit atop the NL East division as the All-Star break approaches. The Mets are gearing up for a playoff run, but they've likely been playing beneath their true potential with starting pitchers Noah Syndergaard and Carlos Carrasco sitting on the shelf.

Neither player has yet to start a game for New York this season. Syndergaard is still recovering from the Tommy John surgery he underwent in March 2020. Meanwhile, Carrasco, who was acquired from the Cleveland Indians (along with Francisco Lindor) via trade back in January, is still recovering from tearing his hamstring during spring training.

Fortunately, it's looking like Syndergaard and Carrasco could be back ahead of schedule.

New York Mets News

Newsday's Tim Healey reported on Monday that Mets manager Luis Rojas said that both Syndergaard and Carrasco could finish their rehab stints in the majors when the time comes. For Syndergaard, that's not expected until closer to September, considering how he hasn't thrown off the mound yet.

On the other hand, Carrasco could be back much sooner — as early as the end of July, in fact. The 34-year-old righty participated in fielding drills on Monday, according to Healey. The plan is for him to throw to live batters on Tuesday before heading on a rehab assignment in the minors.

Regardless of when Syndergaard and Carrasco come back, they'll surely help the Mets have one of the best rotations in the entire MLB. They already have National League MVP favorite Jacob deGrom on the mound. When you take him and add Syndergaard (3.31 ERA and 9.7 S/O per 9 innings pitched on his career) and Carrasco (2.91 ERA and 10.9 SO/9 IP in 2020), that seems like a recipe for success.

The Mets are currently one of FanDuel Sportsbook's favorites to win the World Series. Their +900 odds put them in a tie for the fourth-best shot at winning the championship this season.
