Despite sporting a 24-32 record, the Miami Marlins are only 6.0 games back of the New York Mets for the NL East lead. Unfortunately, a campaign riddled with injuries to their starting pitchers has made it difficult to find consistency. Now, rookie righty Cody Poteet is the latest Miami pitcher to find himself on the sidelines.
Poteet started against the Pittsburgh Pirates on Friday night but was pulled from the game with two outs in the bottom of the third inning. At the time, it was unknown what his injury diagnosis was. MLB.com reporter Christina De Nicola reported on Saturday that Poteet sprained his right MCL and will now be out of the lineup for the foreseeable future.
Cody Poteet Injury Update
The Marlins subsequently put Poteet on the 10-day Injured List and will re-evaluate him as time goes on. Regardless of how much time he misses, this injury update is nothing short of bad news for the Marlins organization and its fans. Considering Miami is already without starters Elieser Hernandez and Sixto Sanchez, this latest injury is quite the blow.
Poteet received his opportunity to pitch for the Marlins this season because of the injury issues that the team had been dealing with. Nevertheless, the 26-year-old had been making the most out of every opportunity given to him. Through five starts in 2021, Poteet has a 2-2 record with a 3.75 ERA. He's also struck out 21 batters through 24.0 innings pitched.
Even if Poteet returns quickly, the Marlins are still a longshot to win this year's World Series. They currently have the 23rd-worst odds to win at +10000, according to FanDuel Sportsbook.
