The Seattle Mariners didn't get a chance to join in on Thursday's Opening Day festivities after their club's matchup against the Minnesota Twins was postponed due to weather. Fortunately, the Mariners gave their fans something to celebrate on Friday in the form of a major contract extension for one of their top infielders.

The Mariners announced Friday that they have signed Gold Glove-winning shortstop J.P. Crawford to a five-year, $51 million extension. The 27-year-old has become an important part of Seattle's infield in recent years, so fans can now breathe a sigh of relief — especially after last month's arbitration meeting.

J.P. Crawford Contract Extension

Crawford will make $5 million in salary in 2022, along with a $5 million signing bonus. His salary will then increase to $10 million for 2023 to 2025 before increasing again to $11 million for the final year of the deal in 2026.

Crawford was an ironman for the Mariners last season, only missing two regular-season games. He finished the year with nine home runs and 54 RBIs in 619 at-bats while slashing .273/.338/.376.

Although he didn't win his Gold Glove in 2021, Crawford still demonstrated his defensive value by finishing with a .981 field percentage and career-highs in double plays turned (89) and putouts (222).

The Mariners need Crawford to follow up on last year's success if they hope to return to the playoffs for the first time since 2001. FanDuel Sportsbook's MLB Odds currently favor Seattle to miss the MLB postseason at -225 odds.
