The Seattle Mariners are enjoying an improved season (45-42), but cannot seem to find consistent pitchers to slide in behind Yusei Kikuchi in the rotation. The team recently received some bad news on that front as starter Justus Sheffield was placed on the 10-day inured list due to a left forearm strain.
Justus Sheffield Injury Update
Sheffield told reporters yesterday that he didn't believe he was 100% healthy and now that proves to be true. The young pitcher has struggled to pitch well over the last month and now concerns are to be had about the severity of an injury suffered to his throwing arm.
The 25-year-old is in his fourth season with Seattle and has posted a career 5.37 ERA and 1.62 WHIP across 32 MLB starts. In 2021, Sheffield owns a 5-8 record to go along with a 6.48 ERA. Overall, he has racked up 59 strikeouts and given up 35 walks in a total of 73.2 innings pitched.
Right-handed pitcher Erik Swanson was called up by the Mariners in a corresponding move. Manager Scott Servais must now search for a replacement to take on Sheffield's spot in the rotation and Robert Dugger seems to be the leading candidate. Seattle's pitching depth just continues to get thinner and thinner.
The Mariners will look to keep their momentum going and make a run at securing an American League Wild Card spot. They currently sit 3.5 games back and have odds set at +20000 to win the World Series, according to FanDuel Sportsbook.
