Mariners Land No. 2 Ranked International Prospect as Signing Period Opens

The Seattle Mariners have scoured the international pool to find a few of their best players before, including reigning AL Rookie of the Year Julio Rodriguez. They are hoping their latest signing can prove to be as stellar as well given he is listed at No. 2 on MLB.com's international amateur rankings.

Seattle Mariners News
The Mariners have signed shortstop Felnin Celesten to a deal that includes a healthy bonus of $4.7 million. The 17-year-old out of the Dominican Republic is highly praised for raw power at the plate and elite speed on the base paths. Celesten has also shown above-average fielding skills on the diamond.
The young switch-hitter is still growing into his 6-foot-1 frame, too, which gives his potential to keep developing at the plate. There's a certain swagger about Celesten that would help him fit in with other big stars in the Mariners' organization and could cause a rapid ascent through the minor leagues.
It's worth noting the Mariners also came to an agreement with right-handed pitcher Jeter Martinez. The 16-year-old out of Mexico is ranked No. 42 on MLB.com's international amateur rankings and is commended for his a sinking fastball. Martinez's upside is that of a high-end starter down the road.
Keep an eye on which teams the rest of the top international prospects sign with as the bonus pools across the league start to dwindle. It sure looks like the Mariners got what they were looking for. For now, Seattle has odds set at +1600 to win the 2023 World Series, according to FanDuel Sportsbook.
