John Axford's return to the MLB was short-lived. On Monday night, the 11-year MLB veteran appeared for the Milwaukee Brewers in his first game since 2018.
Unfortunately for Axford and the Brewers, that outing didn't last long and the 38-year-old reliever was removed with a potential injury. An update on Wednesday confirmed the worst-case scenario for this heart-warming story.
John Axford Injury Update
According to reports, Axford has suffered "significant structural damage" in his pitching elbow and won't be able to pitch again this season. At this point, this could be the end of a lengthy career for Axford.
After all, getting to the point of pitching for Milwaukee was quite a redemption story. Axford began his season working as a studio analyst on the Toronto Blue Jays' broadcast team. He then pitched in Olympic qualifying games for Team Canada before signing a minor-league deal with the Blue Jays.
The Blue Jays cut him before Milwaukee took a flier on the veteran right-hander thanks to some injury troubles of their own in the bullpen. Sadly, this story doesn't appear to have a Hollywood-worthy happy ending. Still, it was quite the run for the 38-year-old if he does decide to hang 'em up.
