Guardians Reveal Starting Rotation to Begin Spring Training Schedule
The Cleveland Guardians are getting ready to start their official Spring Training exhibition schedule on Saturday, Feb. 25. It's just the start of a long ramp-up towards Opening Day but the Guardians have their sights set on a deeper postseason run after pushing the New York Yankees to five games in the ALDS.
On Monday, Guardians manager Terry Francona revealed his initial starting rotation for the upcoming contests.
Francona wants to get early looks at the two biggest question marks in Cleveland's rotation, handing the ball to Cal Quantrill on Saturday against the Cincinnati Reds. Then, Zach Plesac gets the nod on Sunday against the Texas Rangers.
Cleveland's starting rotation lifted them to 92 wins and an AL Central division title last year, but Quantrill and Plesac gave Francona the most trouble of his accomplished group. Quantrill pitched to a 3.38 ERA last season but faltered in the playoffs while Plesac struggled with a 4.31 ERA mark throughout the regular season.
Francona will then turn to his more trusted options, handing Shane Bieber his first Spring Training start on Monday against the Chicago Cubs and then Triston McKenzie on Tuesday against the Kansas City Royals.
