The Charlotte Hornets made a big splash in free agency by adding forward Gordon Hayward. However, Hayward has landed on the injury report with a fracture in one of his fingers on his right hand. It sounds like the injury is minor, rather than major, but it could have an impact on his fantasy basketball outlook to start the season.
Gordon Hayward Fantasy Outlook
At the moment, it doesn't appear as though Hayward wil miss extended time. The team is listing him just as day-to-day going forward, which should be a sigh of relief for fantasy managers with him on the roster (or planning to select him).
The Hornets have two more preseason games before they start the regular season on Dec. 23, so it's important to monitor his status before setting your lineups next week. He may need to take up an injury spot on your team to begin the season.
Hayward averaged 17.5 points, 6.7 rebounds and 4.1 assists per game for the Boston Celtics last season. He will be one of Charlotte's main options this season, and his average draft position (ADP) of 50th overall, according to FantasyPros' draft data, reflects that.
The forward has struggled with lower-body injuries in the past, but this seems to be a minor hand ailment that shouldn't keep Hayward sidelined for long.
Star rookie LaMelo Ball could benefit from extra minutes if Hayward is forced to miss a couple of games to begin the year.
