Week 7 of the 2022 season was a strange one for Mike Evans. He dropped an easy touchdown on the very first drive of the game, his Tampa Bay Buccaneers shockingly lost to the inept Carolina Panthers 21-3, and he had a peculiar postgame exchange with two refs from the contest that was caught on video.
After some speculation, the NFL has revealed the full details of the incident, and they're quite bizarre.
The league office says side judge Jeff Lamberth and Evans share a mutual connection due to their Texas A&M roots. While many thought Evans was signing an autograph for the ref, the NFL clarified the Bucs wideout was writing down his phone number so Lamberth could pass that along to a golf pro in order to receive lessons.
It's safe to say this explanation hasn't won anyone over. Those who believe in conspiracies about officials calling games in favor of certain teams or players are running rampant with theories after this suspect exchange between Evans and Lamberth was caught on video.
The league office did issue a warning to Lamberth and fellow ref Tripp Sutter, who was also in the video, about "avoiding even the appearance of impropriety" with anyone involved in gameday operations.
All parties avoided any kind of discipline, so hopefully this puts the issue to bed and isn't a distraction for Evans as he looks to help his team get back to .500.
