Plenty of New York Jets fans were hoping the team would select a wide receiver with the No. 11 pick in the 2020 NFL Draft. Of course, that didn't happen, as the team opted to take Louisville's Mekhi Becton to shore up the offensive line.
That decision really paid off though, as Denzel Mims, a bonafide first-round talent, fell to the team toward the end of the second round at No. 59 overall. One of the most athletic receivers from a stellar class, Mims' rookie year projections, provided by FanDuel Sportsbook, should have Jets fans hyped about the Baylor product's future.
Denzel Mims Projections 2020
Mims' over/under for his receiving yards in 2020 has been set at 684.5, with -112 odds on each side. The over/under for his touchdowns, meanwhile, has been set at 5.5, though the -142 odds on the over suggests that's the more likely outcome.
And it's certainly not a stretch to think that Mims could meet, or exceed, these projections. For one, he's stepping into a pretty wide-open situation with the Jets. He should instantly become one of the team's top-three pass-catchers, playing alongside Jamison Crowder and newcomer Breshad Perriman in New York.
Mims should also be able to make an instant impact thanks to that opportunity and his elite athleticism. He flat-out dominated the 2020 NFL Combine, posting top-five numbers among receivers in the 40-yard dash (4.38 seconds) and the broad jump (131.0 inches), while also recording the best time in the 3-cone drill (6.66 seconds).
If these projections are any indication, Mims has a chance to hit the ground running as a rookie.
