After back-to-back five-win seasons, it's safe to say that Carolina Panthers head coach Matt Rhule is on the hot seat. And not even a few months into retirement, legendary New Orleans Saints coach Sean Payton's name continues to fly around as a potential option for his replacement.
A recent report from Michael McCarthy at FrontOfficeSports suggested Carolina is eyeing Payton for a potential head coaching vacancy for the 2023 season. Panthers owner David Tepper weighed in on these rumors with a call to his current head coach.

Tepper reportedly gave Rhule a call ahead of the story coming out, saying simply that "there was nothing to it."
It's still unclear if Tepper was simply doing the right thing by his employee, or if there's truth to his sentiment.
Payton's retirement plays a factor in any potential moves here. The Super Bowl-winning head coach was under contract with New Orleans until 2024, so the team holds his rights' if he decided to make a quick return to coaching.
The NFC South rivalry between New Orleans and Carolina is, at the very least, a small factor in these rumors. For now, Rhule's job appears safe. But another slow start will have the temperature on his hot seat rising to uncomfortable levels.
