David Montgomery Injury Update Clouds Fantasy Outlook in Bears Backfield

Chicago Bears second-year running back David Montgomery suffered a non-contact injury on Wednesday. The severity of the injury has to be announced, but any extended absence for Montgomery would create some fantasy value for his backups.
Unfortunately, it's unclear who would step up in Montgomery's absence.
Bears’ starting running back David Montgomery was carted away from today’s practice after injuring his left leg. Montgomery slipped before he took a handoff from Mitchell Trubisky, went to the ground and got up holding his left leg, in serious pain, per @DickersonESPN.

David Montgomery Fantasy Football Outlook
Montgomery is coming off the board with an average draft position (ADP) of RB26. That's right about where he should be going – though obviously this would change if he's looking at a bad injury.
Volume was never the concern for Montgomery, as he saw 242 carries and 35 targets as a rookie last year. His efficiency was a problem, however, as he averaged just 3.7 yards per carry, totaling a measly 889 rushing yards. Any potential lingering effects from this injury certainly wouldn't help him increase that efficiency in 2020.
Updated: Bears’ HC Matt Nagy said RB David Montgomery suffered a groin strain, and he is undergoing further testing. Team said he was not carted off, he walked off the field on his own.

If Montgomery is on the shelf for a while, Tarik Cohen and, surprisingly, Cordarrelle Patterson look set to handle the bulk of the touches as of now. But neither projects as a feature back, so Chicago could look to bring in a free agent, like Devonta Freeman.
Fantasy managers will need to monitor this situation carefully as it develops.
