The Chicago Cubs are in the midst of a brutal stretch of baseball. They have lost 12 of their last 13 games and are plummeting in the NL Central division with a record of 43-45. The team made a few transactional moves on Friday including placing reliever Brad Wieck on the injured list.

While a diagnosis of an irregular heartbeat sounds dangerous, this is a type of injury that Wieck has dealt with before. In fact, he underwent a a cardiac ablation procedure in February of 2020 to correct an issue found during spring training. This news still has to be concerning for him, though.

Hopefully more details come out about Wieck's status in the next couple days as he is set to undergo more tests and evaluations. Manager David Ross reiterated to reporters that the team is making sure to take the situation very seriously and that Wieck's mental state of mind is important as well.

Wieck had been a reliable arm out of the bullpen for the Cubs this season posting a spotless 0.00 ERA and 1.18 WHIP across 17.0 innings pitched. Overall, the fifth-year pro has been enjoying a bounce-back year, racking up 28 strikeouts while allowing just 10 hits and 10 walks in 2021.

If the Cubs do not start winning ballgames, they could end up as major sellers at the trade deadline in a few weeks. They currently have odds set at +6000 to win the World Series, according to FanDuel Sportsbook.
