The Chicago Cubs are closing in on their next general manager.

After Theo Epstein stepped down from the position in November 2020, Cubs president Jed Hoyer has been acting as the team's general manager. However, Sahadev Sharma and Patrick Mooney of The Athletic reported on Saturday that Hoyer has narrowed down his list of potential GM candidates to the following four individuals:

- Carter Hawkins (Cleveland)
- James Harris (Cleveland)
- Carlos Rodriguez (Rays)
- Jeremy Zoll (Twins)

Cubs General Manager

Sharma and Mooney went on to add that a decision about the general manager position could be made as soon as the ongoing divisional round is over.

Hawkins has spent the last 13 years with the Cleveland Indians. He began as a scouting intern but quickly rose up the ranks, taking on player development jobs before becoming the assistant general manager — a position he holds to this day.

Meanwhile, Harris has spent the past five years with Cleveland — first as a director of player development before being promoted to vice president of player development in 2020. He's also worked for the Philadelphia Eagles and San Francisco 49ers, so he'd bring experience from different sporting worlds.

Rodriguez has been around the MLB for a while now, but he's been with the Tampa Bay Rays for the last 11 seasons. He worked as a scout for the majority of his tenure, however, he's currently the vice president of player development and international scouting. With the success the Rays are having this year, Hoyer wouldn't mind those results in Chicago down the line.

Lastly, Zoll is the Minnesota Twins assistant general manager and focuses most of his attention on minor league development. While the Twins have had their ups and downs over the years, their player development has been solid and that's something a rebuilding team needs.
