In an already eventful offseason, the Carolina Panthers released former 2015 regular season MVP quarterback Cam Newton, forcing him to find another place to call home.

While there have been a number of rumored landing spots since the release, the Los Angeles Chargers have now leapfrogged the Chicago Bears as the new favorites to sign Newton, at -150 odds, according to FanDuel Sportsbook.

The Chargers also moved on from their long-time veteran quarterback this offseason, allowing Philip Rivers to sign with the Indianapolis Colts. The team then went all-in on the Tom Brady sweepstakes, but ultimately did not sign him. When Brady was off the table, the rumors of Newton to the Chargers began, but there have been various reports saying they would stick with Tyrod Taylor at starter or look to the NFL Draft.

Despite playing for some poor teams, Taylor actually has a winning record in his 46 NFL starts (23-21-1). While he will turn 31 years old before the season begins, he has less wear and tear on his body than the typical 31-year-old starting quarterback. However, will the Chargers commit to him as the starter and add a backup in the draft, or will they sign Newton and have a competition in Training Camp for the starting job?

The odds certainly favor the latter, with all other teams having long shot odds — Jacksonville Jaguars (+470), Miami Dolphins (+470), Denver Broncos (+600), New England Patriots (+650), Washington Redskins (+1000), Las Vegas Raiders (+1200) and Pittsburgh Steelers (+2000).

It's tough to imagine Newton being okay with a backup gig somewhere, so we will see which team, if any, is willing to hand over the reins to the former MVP.
