This NBA season has been full of numerous twists and turns, but one of the most surprising may be the recent reunion between long-time starting center Anderson Varejao and the Cleveland Cavaliers. Cleveland recently signed Varejao to a 10-day contract as they fight to pull off some upsets in a losing season.
This comes as a bit of a shock given Varejao last played in the NBA back in 2017 with the Golden State Warriors and has been balling in Brazil ever since. The Cavaliers have recently suffered a number of injuries on the roster and have called upon Varejao for fill in the gap for the team.
Cavaliers News: Anderson Varejao Signed
The 38-year-old veteran spent 12 years with Cleveland from 2004-2016, but was traded to the Portland Trail Blazers just months before the Cavaliers won their first NBA title. In fact, Varejao was on the other sideline during the finals as the Golden State Warriors picked him up after Portland waived him.
Varejao was always a fan favorite as those watching could see how much he loved playing the game of basketball. His hustle on the court earned him the nickname of "Wild Thing" while he racked up the sixth most rebounds in franchise history. Now he has a chance to replicate his aggressive playing style against some of the sport's top young talent again.
With a current record of 21-43, the Cavaliers could benefit from having a positive storyline surrounding the team. Varejao calls Cleveland his home and maybe he can still make some great plays as he is set to suit up for his 592nd career game with the Cavaliers.
