The Tampa Bay Buccaneers vs. New Orleans Saints rivalry has really heated up in recent years, and with the Bucs looking more competitive than ever with Tom Brady at the helm, it should get even more intense in 2020.

This year's series between the two kicks off with a Week 1 matchup in New Orleans. On FanDuel Sportsbook, the Buccaneers have opened as sizable underdogs on the road.

Of course, these teams have undergone some significant changes over the years, but let's take a look at how betting on this series has played out over the years.

Saints vs Buccaneers History

Over the last decade, the Saints and Buccaneers have met 20 times. The Saints are 14-6 in those matchups, but the straight up outcome of their Week 6 game in 2011, for example, doesn't mean much for what's going to happen in 2020.

Betting trends can be longer-lasting, though, with the markets overrating some teams and underrating others. So instead we can look at who has won against the point spread (ATS).

The Saints have been favorites in 18 of those 20 games, but even still they've managed to exceed expectations more often than not, going 11-9 ATS. They won against the spread in both 2019 meetings, once clearing the spread by 3.5 points and the other time blowing it away by 11.5.

If we expand our view back to the 2002 season, when the NFC South was first formed, we see the same trend. The Saints have clear control in the win-loss record (22-14), but they also come out ahead ATS more often as well, at 19-16-1.

This series takes a wild turn with the addition of a future Hall-of-Fame QB in Tampa, but if past trends are any indication, Saints fans could be in for an exciting start to the year in Week 1 of the 2020 season.
