Even Angel Hernandez Couldn't Stop Spencer Turnbull Last Night

By now it's not going to be news to any Detroit Tigers fan that Spencer Turnbull threw his first ever major league no-hitter on Tuesday. Turnbull faced only 29 batters in the game — giving up two walks — and tallied 9 strikeouts as he held the Seattle Mariners hitless.

What is surprising is that he managed to overcome one of the game's biggest obstacles in doing so. Infamous umpire Angel Hernandez was behind the dish. And with his inconsistency in calling balls and strikes, no pitcher had ever thrown a no-no with Hernandez at home plate before.

Obviously Hernandez's difficulties deciphering balls and strikes can work in favor of pitchers as much as it can work against them, but simply having that inconsistency can be jarring. With a consistent ump, pitchers can get a feel for how the strike zone will be called that day. With Hernandez, all bets are off.

In a season already loaded with no-hitters, it's great to see there are still factors that can go into making each one special in its own right.
