The San Francisco 49ers' pecking order at wide receiver is starting to take shape ahead of the 53-man roster deadline at 4 p.m. ET. Following the releases of KeeSean Johnson and Marcus Johnson, veteran Willie Snead got the chop after being added as a late offseason signing a few weeks ago.

San Francisco 49ers Roster Cuts

San Francisco does want to bring Snead back as a practice squad member, which lines up as a logical move. If Deebo Samuel or Brandon Aiyuk were to suffer an injury, Snead has the experience to step in along the outside immediately. That same thing can't be said about some of the younger wideouts.

Snead had played in 11 or more games in each of his first six NFL seasons before struggling to stay on a roster in 2021. He spent time with the Las Vegas Raiders and Carolina Panthers, but only logged 38 receiving yards on 4 receptions. Snead hasn't reached the 500-yard receiving mark since 2018.

The 29-year-old posted 61 yards on 5 receptions with the 49ers this preseason, but a dropped touchdown pass against the Houston Texans may have ultimately sealed his fate. Overall, Snead has tallied 3,431 yards and 16 touchdowns on 279 receptions in 95 career games played.

The 49ers will now move ahead with Samuel, Aiyuk, Jauan Jennings, Ray-Ray McCloud, Danny Gray and Malik Turner making up the wide receiver position. It's a crucial spot for the San Francisco considering the development of quarterback Trey Lance is among the team's top priorities in 2022.

San Francisco has odds set at +1600 to win Super Bowl 57, according to FanDuel Sportsbook.
